The writing is confused, in fact, this is really two books…one on non-human societies and one on human societies. I actually found it really interesting! The third book has not been published, yet. The overarching theme is of course one of “nature strikes back” but there are also some subtle (or not-so-subtle) references to the Cold War/nuclear war, immigration / racism, civil unrest, and a society (New York) besieged and teetering on the verge of collapse. I'm almost positive I didn't finish it, but one image has stuck with me ( that guy--or girl or whomever--hiding from the bees by laying in the creek breathing through a straw). Helpful.
